Andrew DeNicola, also known as “Andy” or “Dean,” the longtime band director at John P. Stevens High School, has passed away. A social media post that said, “I was saddened to hear the news last night that Andrew DeNicola left us too soon, was used to declare his death. He served as a buddy, mentor, and instructor. I’m praying for his friends, family, and everyone whose life he impacted. Having knowing him, we were all better individuals. He was very unique. In honor of him, let’s raise a White Castle. Dean, rest in peace.”

About Andrew DeNicola

When Andrew DeNicola, then 21 years old, started teaching music at Edison’s Woodrow Wilson School in 1973, he was a new hire. As a recent graduate of Montclair State University with a degree in music, he was happy to accept the position in his hometown. Known to his peers as “Andy” or “Dean,” DeNicola quickly rose to the position of band director at J.P. Stevens High School. DeNicola has been honing the high school band’s skills for 50 years, transforming it into a program that has won awards.

DeNicolas’ Retirement and Legacy

DeNicola ultimately retired in the summer of 2023, capping a brilliant 50-year career that left him with enormous shoes to fill and a rich legacy. After enrolling in Edison Public Schools, DeNicola wed Kathy, his childhood sweetheart from the neighborhood. His 50th wedding anniversary also falls on the same year as his retirement. DeNicola was among the top 10 finalists for the inaugural GRAMMY Music Educator Award in 2013. He got admitted to the American Bandmasters Association in 2019. DeNicola, a devoted family man, acknowledges his wife Kathy’s assistance over the years.
