George Bakris has passed away unexpectedly. He was announced dead in a Facebook post by The International Society of Nephrology (ISN). “The International Society of Nephrology is deeply saddened by the loss of Prof. George Bakris, a true pillar in the field of nephrology, as well as a researcher, teacher, and clinician in the history of hypertension. His invaluable contributions will continue to inspire and guide us” He died leaving a huge gap in the hearts of many, that may never be filled. 

About George Bakris

George Bakris, Professor of Nephrology and Hypertension at the University of Chicago and Honorary Doctor of the University of Athens, departed unexpectedly yesterday. The Athens Medical School extends its condolences to his family. It turned out that the optimism that George would have prevailed over his illness even at this point was unfounded. Professor Bakris has a vibrant, multidimensional, and captivating personality. Outstanding physician, researcher, and scientist with international reputation and relevance. He was a “nice”, compassionate man, of course. 1952 saw him born in Piraeus while his American-Greek parents were visiting his mother’s hometown in Greece.

He returned to America at the age of thirty days, residing and growing up in South Bend, Indiana. Bakris, a professor of nephrology at Chicago G University, is well-known in the international medical community for his extensive research on metabolic disorders, hypertension, nephrology, and cardiology. Professor Bakris had primarily focused on and pioneered the fields of resistant hypertension and diabetic renal disease. By delivering novel therapeutic compounds to the market, the randomized studies he organized and oversaw defined the therapeutic treatment of a variety of cardiovascular ailments.

Professor Bakris is ranked #1 in every list created by different organizations that ranks scientists according to their significance and renown in particular fields of science. Above all, Professor Bakris was a teacher with a great aptitude for passing along knowledge. In doing so, he guided a significant number of human scientists who aspired to focus on diabetes, renal disease, and hypertension. A few of them, such Professors Kostas Makrylakis and Alexandros Briasoulis, are prominent figures at the university and come from the Greek region.
